What’s in Our Emergency Survival Kit? (Japan Disaster Preparedness Stockpiling 101)

Japan is well-known for its safety and low crime rates, but something dangerous that is beyond the reach of the long arm of the law is natural disasters. Every year Japan is rocked by around 1,500 earthquakes, a multitude of typhoons, and increasing cases of extreme flooding.

Tokyo is expecting its next “big” earthquake (magnitude 7+) sometime this century, and it is estimated that there is a 70% chance of it striking within the next 30 years. But some disasters are easier to predict than others; in July this year, the southern Japanese island Kyushu was badly hit by unexpectedly heavy rain and floods, which resulted in many fatalities and missing persons.

Whilst Japan has an array of natural disaster warning apps and ways to help prepare for the worst and keep us as safe as possible, people often don’t act until it is too late. Given the situation with the pandemic, going to an emergency shelter is undesirable and so stocking up on food and survival essentials at home is especially important. In addition to having a “go bag” with enough emergency supplies to last 3 days, we have stockpiled enough food to last for around 10 days in order to wait things out (if possible) at home. So with that being said, we decided it was high time we checked out what we have in our emergency kit and to make sure all of our food stock is in date!

Stay safe, everyone! ❤️
